Reddit lets you tailor your profile to subreddits, inc hiding NSFW content

Reddit has announced the ability to curate your profile, tailoring what is shown to users in different subreddits. You can, for example, choose to display posts and comments from some communities, while hiding those from others.

So if you’ve been wanting to hide the fact that you participate in Android forums from your iPhone buddies, you can. The platform made the announcement today.

Starting today, we’re rolling out updates to profile settings, making it easier for redditors to manage their presence and control what appears on their Reddit profile.

Via a new setting – ‘Content and activity’ – users can fine-tune what content appears on their profile on a subreddit-by-subreddit basis. This means redditors can participate in communities without sharing their full post and comment history in their profile. They’ll now have a few new options:

  • The ability to keep all posts and comments visible (current default).
  • The option to hide all public posts and comments, including those made directly on their profile (new option).
  • The option to selectively display posts and comments from chosen communities while keeping others hidden (new option).

The new profile section comprises:

  • The ‘Content and activities’ setting for controlling post and comment visibility.
  • An NSFW toggle to show or hide NSFW content and communities on the profile.
  • A Followers toggle to show or hide follower count.

However, Engadget notes that not everyone is happy with the change.

Up to now, Reddit has included users’ full commenting and posting activity in profiles. So while most users are anonymous, others could easily check out their post history and see what communities they’re active in. The feature, which many users see as a key part of Reddit’s openness, has helped Redditors ferret out trolling, lying and numerous other types of bad (or merely embarrassing) behavior on the platform.

“This seems like it’s going to lead to bad actors being able to more easily hide their behavior from the average user,” one of the most-upvoted comments on Reddit’s post says. “Unless you’re a mod, you won’t be able to see that they’re posting inflammatory misinformation across a dozen different subs, for instance.”
